A common mistake that businesses make on social media platforms is only posting content or news that is about them. Your audience will not pay attention to your posts until you connect with them and earn their attention by providing value to them first.

Providing value comes in many different forms such as tips, a how-to, inspirational content, light-hearted content, community news, etc. I find myself explaining it this way to clients—social media is like a friendship. It’s give and take and you must remember that social media marketing is a two way conversation with your audience. Start conversations or ask questions with your audience regularly. Allow them to be part of what you’re doing and don’t be afraid to be vulnerable and ask for their opinion once in awhile.

Next, think about why people spend time on social media. Is it to figure out what to buy or spend money on or is it more of an escape from reality and a way of connecting with others?
